WIC Program Benefits, Eligibility, Income Guidelines & How to Apply

Eating healthy is critically important for pregnant women, young children and after postpartum. But it becomes difficult to buy expensive baby formulas and nutritious food for low-income households.

A recent survey shows that one in five pregnant women experiences food insecurity in the U.S. And this lack of food affects both the mother’s health and the fetus’s growth.

So that’s why the USDA launched the WIC program. This program helps low-income mothers, infants and children under 5 with food vouchers, education and service benefits. Almost 6.70 million people participated in the WIC program in 2024, according to Economic Research Service. But a lot of eligible families do not even apply.

WIC eligibility and income requirements change every year so you may qualify this time. So stick by and read to know the maximum gross income limits and the application process for WIC 2026.

What Is The WIC Program?

WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC is a Special Nutrition Program that provides nutritional, counseling and referral benefits to pregnant women. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services operates this federal program. The WIC program is available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 5 United States territories.

What are WIC Eligibility Requirements?

Here are the people who are eligible to apply for the WIC program:

Nutrition Assessment

The WIC team does a nutritional risk assessment to see if you qualify for the benefits. This screening test is free of cost and often performed by a nutritionist or nurse. It includes two types of assessment tests:

  1. High Priority Lab-Based: WIC checks if you are anemic, folate or vitamin D deficient through blood tests. They try to identify the risk of fetal neural tube defects (NTDs) like spina bifida with this assessment. Apart from this, they also look at the weight history of children under 5 and pregnant women.
  2. Diet-Based: Diet-based assessment involves 24 hours dietary recall and food history. A team of nutritionists check if you are food insecure. They also assess your food quality and quantity to see if you have been eating well or not.

You qualify for the WIC program if you are getting benefits such as:

  1. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)/food stamps
  2. Medicaid
  3. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

  2. Breastfeeding Counseling and Support: According to a survey, only 27% of women in the US breastfed their babies exclusively in the first 6 months. This number is decreasing over time but WIC is offering free support. They understand the mother’s problem and guide them what to do. Here is what typically involves:

  2. Baby car seats: WIC free car seat program is for low-income children under age of 5. They provide boosters and harnesses to make sure your child is safe when travelling. But you are getting WIC does not mean you also qualify for a car seat. You have to meet the Child Passenger Safety Technician. They determine if your child is eligible for a FREE car or not.
  3. Healthy Food Packages: WIC does not provide any cash assistance. They provide food packages that differ for every home. Here is what is typically included in a WIC food package:

How to Apply for The WIC Program in 2026?

You can easily apply for the WIC program via the USDA website. You just have to select your state/territory and the website shares:

Your state’s WIC team contacts you for the appointment. You have to carry a few documents to share as proof. They will let you know the document required but typically it includes:

They also do a quick nutrition assessment to see if you are underweight or lack vitamins. You have to get your kids along with you on an appointment. WIC provides an eWIC card on your appointment day. You can activate it and can buy groceries within an hour.

How Soon Can You Get WIC When Pregnant?

You get WIC within two or three days of submitting the application or appointment when pregnant. Make sure to submit the application when you learn about your pregnancy. You need to attach a few documents as mentioned above and a note from your doctor to confirm your pregnancy.

How to Get WIC if Income is Too High?

You automatically qualify for the WIC if you are getting SNAP or TANF benefits. So you can try to get them first. WIC depends on your gross income and the number of family members. So don’t count renters, and those who do not share food and eat with you. But if your income is higher than $2,413/ month or $28,953/annually for 1 person then you will not qualify. This gross income limit is a standard even if you live in Texas or Maryland.

Check the maximum gross income limit table above to see if you are eligible.

Conclusion

The WIC program is designed to help women, infants and children under 5. You get food vouchers, CVB, and referral services for free at WIC. Apart from this, WIC also provides health screening, breastfeeding support and a car seat free for children.

Make sure your gross income limits meet the state limits to qualify. WIC transfers your benefits on eWIC card and you can only use this to buy approved healthy food. You can get WIC benefits within two to three days after submitting an application and in person appointment.

FAQs

Are SNAP and WIC The Same?

No, SNAP and WIC are different in their target audience and approved foods. SNAP provides benefits to all low-income households but WIC only benefits the low-income women, infants and children.

Is eWIC and an EBT card the Same?

No, the EBT card is for SNAP and the eWIC card supports WIC benefits. An EBT card can be used to purchase a wide range of food items. But eWIC supports only pre-approved food items.
