What Formula Does WIC Cover Benefits, Coverage, Monthly Limit & Eligibility

Baby formula is one of the biggest monthly expenses for families with infants. Working women totally rely on these formulas and this market is growing insanely. According to TowardsHealthcare, 42% of the global workforce is women so it does impact the number of women who breastfeed.

However, the government helps families access specific baby formulas for free with WIC. This program is only for women, children and infants but you cannot get any formula. WIC provides approved standard infant formulas from specific brands like Similac, Enfamil or Gerber Good Start.

The brands can differ depending on what your state offers. These formulas are carefully selected to meet a baby’s basic nutritional needs during the first months of life. Apart from this, WIC also has specific limits and approved amounts for these formulas every month.

So we will discuss the formulas that WIC covers, the monthly limit and eligibility rules in this guide. You can also learn the approved brands for formula and how long they offer formula for children.

What is WIC?

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program is a federal assistance program in the United States. It supports the health and nutrition of low-income selected groups. WIC focuses on making sure pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to age five get access to healthy food.

Here are the one who usually qualify for WIC:

Who Can Get the WIC Formula?

Not everyone enrolled in the WIC program automatically receives infant formula. Formula benefits are only given to infants who are not fully breastfed or need supplemental feeding.

WIC formula is usually provided to:

If a baby is fully breastfed then they typically do not receive formula through WIC. But the mother may receive extra food benefits instead. WIC may provide a reduced formula amount to support supplementation if breastfeeding is partial. The type and amount of formula depend on the baby’s feeding needs and medical requirements. We will discuss these things in detail below.

What Formula Does WIC Cover?

The WIC program does not allow families to choose any baby formula from the store. WIC basically works on a One Brand Per State contract system. This system decides exactly which formula brand you will receive.

So each state WIC agency signs a contract with one formula manufacturer through a bidding process. The company that offers the lowest cost gets the contract and becomes the only approved formula provider for that state. This contract usually lasts around 4 years and it means all WIC families in that state will receive formula from that single brand.

Only a few companies have participated in these contracts since the mid-1990s. It includes Abbott Laboratories (Similac), Gerber Good Start and Mead Johnson Nutrition (Enfamil). So the formula brand you get depends completely on your state’s contract.

Formula Types WIC Covers

WIC also provides different types of formula depending on a baby’s health needs.

When Do You Need a WIC Formula Prescription?

Babies sometimes cannot digest standard WIC approved formulas due to medical or digestive issues. So the WIC program allows special or hypoallergenic formulas in such cases. But the process is more strict than the regular formula benefits.

These formulas are specially for infants with serious conditions such as:

You don’t get these formulas automatically but you must have a doctor’s prescription. So you have to send a medical prescription or special formula request to the local WIC office.

WIC will not cover non-standard formulas without this approval. The special WIC infant formulas include EleCare, Neocate and PurAmino. These formulas are usually amino-acid based or extensively hydrolyzed. It means the proteins are broken down so the baby can digest them more easily.

What are the Monthly Limits for WIC Formula in 2026?

The amount of formula WIC program provides is not the same for every baby. It mainly depends on how the baby is fed (breastfed or formula fed) and the baby’s age. WIC measures formulas in fluid ounces per month. They then convert it into an approximate number of standard 12.5 oz powder cans.

So younger babies who are fully formula fed get more formula. While older babies or partially breastfed babies receive less because they start eating solid foods.

Look at table below to see how many cans WIC offers monthly to infants in different age groups:

Feeding type Baby’s age Max fl. oz./month Cans/month
Fully formula-fed 0–3 months Up to 806 fl. oz. 9 cans
Fully formula-fed 4–5 months Up to 884 fl. oz. 10 cans
Fully formula-fed 6–11 months Up to 624 fl. oz. 7 cans
Partially breastfed 0–3 months Up to 364 fl. oz. 4 cans
Partially breastfed 4–5 months Up to 442 fl. oz. 5 cans
Partially breastfed 6–11 months Up to 312 fl. oz. 3–4 cans
Fully breastfed 0–11 months N/A No formula provided

Why does the WIC formula drop after 6 months?

Babies slowly start eating solid foods like cereals and mashed fruits/vegetables as they grow. Because they are getting nutrition from food then they don’t need as much formula. That’s why a fully formula-fed baby goes from about 884 fl. oz at 4-5 months down to 624 fl. oz at 6-11 months.

What does WIC provide instead of an extra formula after 6 months?

The WIC program supports babies with solid food items like iron-fortified cereal, fruits and vegetables after 6 months. WIC may also include baby food meat which helps meet protein and iron needs during this stage.

Do fully breastfed babies get formula or food from WIC in the first months?

Fully breastfed infants (0–5 months) do not receive formula or solid food benefits in that early stage. However, WIC focuses on supporting their mother’s nutrition. So she can continue breastfeeding successfully and provide all necessary nutrients to the baby naturally.

What are the Benefits of the WIC Program for Infants?

WIC provides support and food packages for infants, women and children.

Here is what you typically get:

  1. Powder Formula: The WIC program mainly provides powdered infant formula because it is cost effective and easy to store. This is the standard option most families receive through their monthly benefits.
  2. Liquid Concentrate Or Ready-To-Feed: WIC also provides liquid concentrate or ready to feed formula. This is to fulfill the medical needs, convenience or in emergencies for infants.
  3. Nutrition Counseling: WIC offers free guidance from nutrition experts who help parents understand feeding schedules, baby growth and healthy eating habits. This support ensures both mother and baby get proper nutrition.
  4. Breastfeeding Support: The program encourages breastfeeding and offers help like lactation counseling and support services. Mothers can get advice, resources and even extra benefits if they choose to breastfeed.
  5. Access to Healthy Foods: WIC also provides nutritious food items such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, milk and cereals in addition to formula. These foods support both the baby’s development and the mother’s health.

How to Apply for WIC Formula Benefits

Start by locating the nearest WIC clinic in your area. You can search online using USDA WIC locator. It provides you with details of the office including address and contact information. Contact the office to book your first visit. Some locations also allow online scheduling which makes the process quicker and easier.

Make sure to take basic documents like your ID, proof of income and details about your baby or pregnancy. These are needed to check your eligibility. WIC staff will review your information and confirm eligibility after your appointment. You will start receiving formula and other nutrition benefits right away after the approval.

Conclusion

WIC baby formula covers milk, soy and various disease related formula types. Two to three highlighted brands like Similac and Enfamil for standard formulas. However, there are other brands in formulas for children with some sensitivities or allergies.

WIC usually gives 7 and 10 cans (12.5-ounce powder) of formula per month for fully formula-fed babies till 6 months. Then the amount starts to decrease, and they add the baby food instead. The amount of formula varies at different ages and so the brands also vary in different states.
