What is SYEP?

SYEP stands for Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). It is a government-funded program that gives young people paid summer jobs. It helps students get work experience, learn new skills and understand how a professional environment works.

SYEP is mainly available in New York City (NYC) and its five boroughs. It is one of the largest youth employment programs in the United States. Thousands of young people apply for work opportunities every year.

The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development manages SYEP. It is not just about earning money. It also focuses on building confidence, improving communication skills and preparing youth for future careers.

School comes first in SYEP. If your summer school schedule overlaps with typical work hours (usually 9 AM to 3 PM) then it can be difficult to manage both. You may face:

However, some tracks like Ladders for Leaders or certain higher-education placements may offer more flexible schedules. But you have to choose one in most cases.

What are the Benefits of SYEP?

Are You Eligible For SYEP If You Have Summer School

SYEP is not limited to free summer jobs only. This program helps students from 14 to 16 develop skills.

Here is what students typically get at SYEP:

What are SYEP Programs for Different Age Groups

SYEP runs two separate programs for different age groups:

1. Project-Based Learning

SYEP does not provide summer jobs to people under 15. They fall in the Younger Youth (YY) bracket and SYEP focuses on building their skill set. So you don’t work at a cash register or in an office. But you’ll work in a group on a project (like a community garden or a media presentation).

This is a paid learning task where students get a stipend of up to $700. This program lasts for six weeks and you have to participate for 12.5 hours per week. The stipend you get is based on your attendance and active participation in classes.

2. Work Experience

SYEP offers paid summer jobs to students between 16 to 24. Students have to work 25 hours per and they get paid hourly. The pay rate in NYC is around $17 per hour and $16 in Jefferson County (the rest of New York State). It is around $15 in Chicago for 30 working hours.

SYEP pay rate differs by age in Washington, DC:

Apart from this, the type of job you get also affects the pay rate. Here is the average hourly rate for few jobs:

Is it allowed to work more than 25 hours under SYEP?

No, adults are only allowed to work 25 hours per week. If your supervisor asks you to work more hours then it’s free labour. The SYEP portal literally will not allow you to log more than 25 hours. Plus, the program won’t pay you for it and your site could get banned from the program.

How to Apply for SYEP in 2026?

Here is the step by step guide to help you apply for SYEP:

  1. Check Your Eligibility: Make sure you meet the age, location and income requirements. Then choose the application method. You can apply either for Career Ready (through DOE schools) or Community-Based (open to all NYC youth).
  2. Create or Access Your Account: Visit the application.nycsyep.com or your school’s portal (for Career Ready) to create an account. You just have to fill out basic details.
  3. Select a Provider or Track: Every student has to select a provider. If you are applying via Career Ready participants then your school will assign you. But if you are a Community-Based applicant then you can choose from a list of SYEP providers. It includes nonprofits, government offices and private companies. Make sure to choose the ones that are near your home so you can follow up easily.
  4. Complete the Application Form: Tap on the application link and fill out the form to apply for SYEP.
  5. Upload Required Documents: You need to upload:

Make sure scans or photos are clear and documents are authentic.

  1. Submit Your Application: Submit your SYEP application after reviewing it. Make sure to be on time because late applications are usually not accepted.
  2. Wait for the Lottery or Selection: Career Ready has a smaller lottery via your school. But Community-Based SYEP has a larger lottery. You will get an email if you get selected.
  3. Confirm Your Placement: Students have to review the jon and schedule if they get selected. Sometimes they have to verify a few documents and then appear for orientations.

Can I change my Provider after I’ve submitted my application?

No, you cannot change your SYEP provider after submitting your application. If you chose a provider in the Bronx but live in Queens. Then you will have to travel there for your orientation and paperwork.

However, there is only one option to cancel your application and try to apply again later. But this is risky because they might not let you apply again. So it’s usually better to stick with your first choice.

Is an interview actually required for the lottery?

There is typically no interview for SYEP. But you have to give interviews if you applied for Ladders for Leaders (L4L) or the Career Ready track. If you are in the regular lottery and someone asks for an interview fee then it is likely a scam.

Can you sign the SYEP application after submission?

You cannot edit the application but your selected provider can help you. Some providers allow you to send a PDF or image of a signed paper application to override the digital mistake. But If you wait until the lottery pull then you might get disqualified for an incomplete file.

Do I really need working papers if I’m 17?

Yes, you need to have working papers if you are under 18. And it is one of the main reasons student SYEP applications get delayed. These working papers allow teenagers to work legally in New York. They show that you are the right age to work. Plus, you meet the school and health requirements. The papers come in different colors depending on your age:

You can get these from your school’s guidance office. Make sure you have them before the program starts in July. Because you cannot start your job without it.

When Do SYEP Applications Open?

SYEP application opens from mid-January to early February every year. The SYEP applications for 2026 opened in January and the deadline was 13 March 2026. So they are closed for now and the program will begin in July and continue until August.

The Summer Youth Employment program offers project-based learning for students between 14 and 15 and jobs for 16-24. Every student has to meet the working criteria and must have the working papers to get a job..

You can easily apply for SYEP via the website. You have to upload your documents and once you qualify, you get an email. You can contact your selected provider for details about the courses and the job. You have to complete the 25 working hours every week to stay in the program.

What is ‘Career Ready’ vs. ‘Community Based’ SYEP?

Yes, unless you meet the working hours of SYEP. But if they find you are working another government-funded job at the same time. Then they kick you out of the program.

Who needs to register for the Selective Service?

If you are male and 18 or older by July 1, 2026, then you have to show the Selective Service proof. This is required by law for programs like SYEP that get government funding.
