Who Qualifies for CalFresh 2026?

Here are the basic eligibility requirements that you need to meet:

• U.S citizen
• Immigrant with a green card
• Have kids under age 6
• Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients
• Receive CalWORKs or General Relief
• Homeless or Pregnant
• Have Low-income or No income
• Have Limited Property

Eligibility requirements for Non-Citizens

• Refugee status, asylum, or parolee status
•  A U-Visa or T-Visa or is applying for one
• Applied for relief under VAWA (Violence Against Women Act)
• Proof of being a Cuban or Haitian entrant

Non-citizens also have to meet the minimum income limits to qualify for CalFresh.

Property and Resource Limits

You qualify if you have a resource of equal or less than $3,000. This limit is increased up to $4,500 if you have an elderly (>60) or disabled member at home.

CalFresh Eligibility for Students

Students can apply for CalFresh if they are

• Working at least 20 hours per week.
• Receiving federal or state work study financial aid
• Enrolled less than half time
• Getting Temporary Financial Assistance (TANF)
• Enrolled in a program that doesn’t require a high school diploma.

You cannot apply if you are on a student visa or under Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

What are the CalFresh Income Guidelines?​

Calfresh income limits depend on your family size and the number of working individuals. There are two types of income limits for SNAP:

1. Gross income limit
2. Net income limit

Gross income is your total income from all sources. Net income is your remaining amount after paying all bills and expenses. Gross income includes:

• Salary/wages (before tax)
• Overtime
• Self-employment income
• Unemployment benefits
• Social Security (some types)
• Disability payments
• Pensions
• Child support received
• Alimony
• Rental income

You have to meet both the minimum gross and net income limits to qualify for CalFresh. 

CalFresh Income Limits 2026​

Here are the maximum income limits that are effective from 10/01/2025 to 09/30/2026.

You are not eligible to apply if your gross income exceeds 130% of the poverty line. This gross income limit is different for MCE households. MCE is Modified Categorical Eligibility for families with kids and other public benefits. So they can apply for CalFresh even if their income is less than 200% of the poverty line. 

CalFresh Gross Income for Disabled

There is an exception for the elderly and disabled who live in a separate home. Older adults qualify for CalFresh if their gross income limit is less than 165% on the federal poverty line.

What Deductions are Allowed in Gross Income?

You can deduct a specific amount from your gross income when calculating net income. Here are the maximum deduction limits:

• Deduct 20% of your earnings 
• $209 for 1 to 3 people
• $223 for households of 4 persons
• $261 for households of 5 persons
• $299 for households of 6 or more persons
• Maximum shelter deduction of $744
• Standard Utility Allowance (SUA) of $663
• Limited Utility Allowance (LUA) of $170
• Telephone Utility Allowance (TUA) of $20
• Deduct $198.99 if you are homeless  

You can also deduct $150 if your medical expenses are between $35.01 to $185/month. But if your medical expense is higher than $180 then you can subtract $35. There are no deductions for people with low medical bills (<35).

Calculating Net Income for CalFresh

Make sure to write down the exact shelter and medical costs when calculating net income. Don’t add any round figures during the calculation. But you can round down/ up the final net income if it’s in cents. And here is the formula:

• Round down 01–49 to the nearest whole dollar

For Example: $332.27 becomes $332

• Round up 50–99 round up to the nearest whole dollar

For Example: $332.85 to $333

What is the Maximum Monthly Allotment of CalFresh?

What are the Work Requirements for CalFresh?

Every person has to follow the work requirements to receive aid. It includes working for almost 30 hours per week if you are physically fit. You have to participate in the CalFresh employment and training program such as:

• Job training

• WIOA activities
• Self-employment programs
• Job search training

ABAWD Work Requirement

The President recently passed the H.R.1 bill to increase the work requirements for Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs). ABAWD includes healthy people farom 18 to 64 years who do not have any kids. So they have to work for at least 80 hours per week according to new rules of February 1, 2026. 

These people can only get CalFresh for 3 months in 36 months. But they can get the benefit for a longer duration if they meet the work requirements. This new rule includes people who were exempt before such as:

• Aged 55-64 years old;
• Parents whose youngest child is 14 or older;
• Homeless People
• Veterans

You will get less benefit if you work a few hours. 

Exemptions from Work Requirements

You don’t have to work if you are:

• Under 18 years old or over 64 years old
• Parent of a child under 14
• Physically or mentally ill (20hours/week)
• Pregnant
• Indian, Urban Indian, or California Indian under the Indian Health Care Improvement Act
• Into the refugee training program (ORR) at least part-time.

CalFresh Restaurant Meal Program (RMP) helps elderly (above 60) to buy ready-made food. But you must purchase food from approved restaurants only.

Disaster CalFresh (D-CalFresh)

D-CalFresh also known as D-SNAP, is a temporary nutrition assistance program to help fire or earthquake survivors. Low-income people living in the affected area are eligible to apply. But they also have to meet the minimum income limits.

What Is IRT For CalFresh?

IRT stands for the Income Reporting Threshold and it is your monthly gross income. You have to report to CalFresh if it exceeds the state’s limits within 10 days. 

But how do you know if your income exceeds? The maximum gross income table is exactly your IRT limits also. So calculate your gross income and if it is more than 130% of FPL, then you have to report. 

What Is CalFresh Sar 7​?

CalFresh Sar 7 is the semi-annual report that every person has to submit after 6 months. This report is to check if you are still eligible for the aid or not. You have to share changes in income and the number of family members.
