EBT Cash Benefits What It Is

EBT Cash is a government assistance program to help low-income Americans meet their daily food and non-food expenses. This program is also known as TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) in some states.

A lot of people confuse the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) or simply food stamps with EBT Cash benefits, though they are different. You can only purchase food items with SNAP cash, but EBT cash allows you to spend on transportation, rent, bills and even on food.

Who is Eligible for EBT Cash (TANF)?

Low-income families with dependent children (under 18) are eligible for the EBT cash program. You can also apply if:

You can receive SNAP and EBT cash benefits but not SSI (Supplemental Security Income) at the same time.

How Do You Get EBT Cash?

The EBT Cash is loaded into your EBT card once your application is approved by the caseworker. You can manage the SNAP (if any) and EBT cash from one EBT card easily.

This card displays two “CASH” and “SNAP” options so you can select the one depending on the type of purchase you have made. EBT cash gives you a free hand so you can buy toilet paper, diapers and clothes, but use SNAP only for groceries (chicken, eggs, milk, etc.).

Do not use EBT or SNAP cash for alcoholic or entertaining stuff because its core purpose is to help families.

How To Withdraw Cash from an EBT Card?

You can withdraw cash from an EBT card at EBT-approved banks, retail stores and service providers. But not all banks process the TANF so look for the ones with the Quest® logo. This step reduces the issue of “card not read” that many people often experience.

You can also get cashback from EBT transactions at retail stores with a POS system such as Clover or Dejavoo.

All banks deduct a specific amount of money on every EBT transaction but you can save that money by joining a free network of MoneyPass or Allpoint.

Note: SNAP cash cannot be withdrawn as cash via any ATM or store.

Can EBT Cash be Transferred to a Bank Card or Cash App Card

Yes, but there is no direct way to do so. You can withdraw your money via ATM and then deposit it in your local bank. Or you get cashback from retail stores like Walmart and then deposit it in your account.

Both of these processes require you to withdraw or use EBT cash first.

However, you can request your county welfare department to send EBT cash directly into your bank and sometimes it does work. But there is no way to transfer the TANF funds into the cash app card directly.

What are the Work Requirements for TANF?

The TANF program has work requirements as a basic benchmark to receive funds. So you need to work, search for a job or participate in community projects for at least 30 hours per week.

This time limit is 20 hours per week for single parents with a child under 6. You have to follow these work requirements to avoid termination or getting banned from receiving funds.

Duration of EBT Cash (TANF) Program

The TANF program does not have any specific expiry date but often lasts for 60 months (5years). This duration varies from state to state so you might experience shorter limits. These funds are transferred every month and complete inactivity for more than 9 months leads to clawback.

EBT Cash does not have a daily spending limit which makes it easy for you to carry household expenses.

How Can You Apply for EBT Cash?

You can apply for the EBT cash benefit from the online portal and via the office of local service providers. Make sure to be transparent and attach the original documents to avoid getting rejected. You need a birth certificate/photo ID, proof of income, proof of residency, a social security number and information about your children to apply. Keep the track of the application and appear for interviews to secure your funds or you won’t get a second chance.

Conclusion

EBT cash is a funding program to support low-income US citizens. Unlike SNAP, which limits people to use funds solely for food, EBT cash gives free rein. You can pay bills, get groceries or spend them on transportation.

Avoid using this cash for alcohol, tobacco, gambling and all entertaining items as it’s illegal. EBT Cash benefits are only designed to support your family structure when you are struggling to find a job. So follow the work requirements and remember TANF is not a forever benefit program.
