Medicare is the federal health insurance program in the United States to help 65 years old access healthcare services. This program has four parts such as A, B, C, D. Every part offers different health care services.

Premium-Free Medicare Part A Based on Age

You qualify for free Medicare Part A if:

These people do not have to file a separate application. They qualify automatically when they turn 65. But if you are not getting these benefits, you have to apply yourself. Medicare coverage begins the month you turn 65. Make sure to apply within 6 months to get coverage on time. But if you apply late after 6 months then Medicare covers only the previous 6 months. Medicare Based on Disability  

A disabled person gets benefits within 24 months if they are already getting SSA and RRB benefits. But this time duration is different for government employees. They usually receive Part A benefits after 29 months. Both of these people get free automatic Part A benefits.

ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)

People with ALS don’t have to wait to get Medicare benefits. Part A starts the first month they submit the application.

Child Disability

Medicare has different rules for a child with disability. They cannot get Part A benefits before the age of 20. However, there is an exception if they develop ALS. Then Medicare is used at the age of even 18. 

End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

ESRD qualify for premium-free benefits if they:

Part A starts after 3 months when the regular dialysis is started. But you may get in 1 month if you start self-dialysis training or have a kidney transplant. You can also get these benefits for 2 months before transplant if you were in the hospital.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Medical insurance covers the doctor visit, X-ray, laboratory test and outpatient costs. You have to pay a premium of $202.90 in 2026 even if you don’t visit a doctor. There is an increase of $17.90 in 2026 compared to the $185.00 in 2025 premium cost. Likewise, the annual deductible amount of 2026 is  $283 which is high compared to $257 of 2025.

Part B Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) 2026

IRMMA is for people who earn a lot of money. So they have to pay a high premium compared to normal people. It only affects 8% of the people and rest pay standard amount. The government use 2 year look back rule to see your income limits.

Medicare Part C (Advantage Plans)

Medicare Part C is also known as an Advantage Plan. It is a private insurance plan that covers the benefits of both Part A and Part B (sometimes even Part D). Advantage plan is different from original Medicare and includes extra benefits like:

More than half of the people apply for advantage plans every year. They limit the doctors and hospitals you can visit. Every state has different active plans. For example, there were about 42 plans in 2025 throughout the US. But they are reduced to 32 in 2026. Insurance companies decide which plans will be active in a specific state. If you were receiving benefits and your plan is not available anymore. Then you have to switch to the active ones in your state.

There are five types of Medicare Advantage Plans in 2026:

Medicare Plan D (Drug Coverage)

Medicare Plan D is also known as “Drug Prescription Coverage”. It covers:

Most of the medicare plans include drug coverage. It is present in many advantage plans or you can add it optionally in Part A and Part B benefits. So you don’t have to apply separately. Plan D premium very from plan to plan. But the deductible amount is $615 for plan D in 2026. Medicare cut the premiums of Part A, B and D from your Social Security check.

How to Choose a Plan D plan:

Stages of Plan D Coverage

Medicare drug prescription plan covers medicine costs in three stages:

You have to pay the $615 deductible amount first to activate your Medicare benefits.

When you pay the deductible amount, then the cost sharing system starts. You have to pay small amounts like $10 or $30 dollars with Medicare benefits.

When you spend almost $2,100 out of your own pocket then stop. Medicare covers all the expenses after that and you don’t have to pay anything.

Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap) 

Medical Supplemental insurance is an extra insurance system. It helps you pay costs that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn’t cover. You have to get a Medigap plan and pay a private company to get these benefits. They help you pay less out-of-pocket and get these benefits. You cannot get a Medigap plan with Advantage plans.

There are three ways to apply for Medicare Program:
